Volkei

Appearance
Resembling bipedal wolves, Volkei are omnivorous humanoids.

History
In the First Age, many Volkei suffered under the tyranny of the Veri Royal Family as many thousands of Volkei were bought or sold as slaves to Veri tribes. As a result, the Veri and the Volkei have a long history of conflict.

The Volkei were governed by an ascetic priesthood which forbade all trade in favor of independence. While the priesthood held a powerful grip on the Volkei, their authority was rarely challenged which made it remarkably easy to impersonate a priest, causing occasional scandals.

While the Volkei once possessed great leathery wings, Ashrahka grew jealous of their flight and stripped them of their wings.

Culture
Family is very important to the Volkei. Nuclear families are the most basic social unit in Volkei society, but often 2-3 families will form alliances called packs. Working together is important, especially on the hunt, for survival. Because men usually outnumber women, unpaired women are rare. Casanova tales are quite popular, though risque in Volkei culture.

A lone Volkei is a sad sight indeed. Depression sets in quickly with the Volkei, so they are driven to form friendships or submit to crippling ennui.

Piety remains an important value in Volkei society. Ascetic living and cultivating personal spirituality being the core of this belief. Priestly brotherhoods are common as a result.
