Janavar females go through periods of heat on reaching adulthood and every two to eight years after that. The first litter is always small (1 or 2 children), but subsequent litters are larger (3 – 6 children). Janavar are superfecund; that is, a female may mate with more than one male when she is in heat, with the result that different children in a litter may have different fathers often evident in their similar markings. Janavar females have to be in a relaxed state in order to mate, physical or emotional stress causes her reproductive organs to close.
Janavar are descended from the Myr. Through the Second Age, many disgraced men believed to be infertile were banished from Myr society. By the Third Age, they had changed significantly from their parent race, supposedly by intermingling with Veri or through the machinations of Demons or the corrupting magics of the Pandemonium.
The Janavar believe that they come from a common mother, Mihkaina, who birthed both Myr and Janavar, but that the children of Myr were consumed by their baser nature and tried devouring the children of Janavar. To distinguish them, the Four-Winds gave the myr horns as signs of their cruel nature. The Myr were banished to freezing Varsad while the Janavar flourished in fertile Yubar.
Janavar have a patrilineal, patriarchal society. However, women have a great deal of power within a family and religious institutions, while men dominate much of the political and military realm.
Most janavar worship nature, the Four-Winds and their ancestors.
Braids, dyeing or shaving patterns into the fur, and inking patterns into their hands or faces are all popular grooming and style techniques common among the janavar.
Many janavar honor others by attaching a title to their name. It is considered insulting to not use someone’s title, so many janavar do so even when conversing in other tongues. Outside Rannan, this is less common.
Janavar men have names that end in -ir, -oz, -or, -o, -il, and -oi. Janavar women have names that end in -a, -e, or -y. Janavar don’t often have family names. Rather, they bear their father’s name, their tribal chief’s name, or a descriptor (e.g. “Pelnia Blacktongue”).
