Bannai resemble humanoid spiders with four arms and four eyes. Their hair and skin is generally devoid of pigments other than brown, white, gray or black and their entire body is covered in patterns resembling scars.

Reproduction is… unusual compared to other species. Rather than direct sexual congress, males produce a web of sperm-drenched sphere and insert it into the female. This gives the bannai complete control over their sexual reproduction.

Once fertilized, females will produce about a silk egg sac filled with about 3,000 eggs in about eight days. Producing and expelling this egg sac is fatal in about half of all pregnancies (Fort Save DC 10). Not all 3,000 young are capable of maturation and require sustenance to grow to maturity. As a result, they consume their brethren in order to survive. In the end, the sac is only big enough to hold one or two offspring — both of which are covered in horrific scars from the mandibles and claws of their devoured siblings. These scars give the bannai their unique appearance.

Tragically, the silk around this egg sac is prized for its strength and beauty in making fashion and rope… so some poor bannai will sacrifice their offspring to make ends meet and unethical silk traffickers will kidnap female bannai in order to produce the silk egg sacs. This is effectively a death sentence to the offspring unless they are taken care of by a professional.

Originally called the Ban-Murai in the Old Tegmurai Language, by the Third Age they had come to be known as the bannai (bannyret: “Speakers”) in broader dialects. During the Second Age, the Tegmur adopted the bannai into their societies under the advice of the God-Queen Mana. The Tegmur protected them and taught them their ways. It was not until the Third Age that the two races parted ways.

In the face of the Cataclysm caused by Mana, many bannai turned away from the Goddess of Hearth-Fire, unable to reconcile how the embodiment of trust, unity, and family could be capable of genocide. Subsequently, bannai have expanded their worship to all the gods of the pantheon. The Third Age also saw the rise of a subrace of bannai called the Aknai (bannyret: “Movers”). Bannai have an ambivalent relationship with the Aknai. Most see the Aknai as either pets, slaves, or children to be protected. Worse still, enmity has arisen between the bannai and a subrace of Aknai called the Mimetai (bannyret: “Imitators”) who have a reputation as cannibalizing their parent races.

While most bannai can still be found in the mountain refuge of Tinadal, they have since expanded to all corners of the world.

The bannai have noted that the brightest of lights create deep shadows, and seek to explore said shadows. Where the Tegmur value wisdom and military prowess, the bannai value Intellect and subtlety. Bannai scholars track the shadows left by the sun, to better understand their creator’s motives.

Dance is a popular form of entertainment and courtship in bannai culture. Older bannai tend to develop antisocial behavior after they have bred and many leave their community for a more solitary existence. Consequently, bannai children are generally cared for by small groups of young bannai.
